I don’t really remember much about The Raid: Redemption other than the gory action/fight scenes.

There’s something about the fight scenes that are so satisfying in this movie that you don’t get in fight scenes from other action movies.

There was a basic plot to fill in the times when they weren’t fighting.

Overall, this movie will be above or below average depending on how much you like fight sequences in movies. For me, it’s above average since I like fight sequences.

But damn, is this movie gory. Not quite as cartoonishly gory as something like Ash vs. Evil Dead, but so close.

The History of Violence blog on AVClub nailed this movie perfectly...it’s a ripper but also an acquired taste.

I was thinking back to a YouTube video showing why Jackie Chan movies are so satisfying and how his fight scenes are filmed so differently from many Hollywood movies - the difference appears to be actually showing the action/impact as opposed to just having a shaky camera close up with a lot of cuts to simulate the fighting. What I remember from Raid/Raid2 is that a lot of fight scenes are just continuous shots where you can actually see the fighting instead of zoom/shake/cut/repeat.

I’m not a filmmaker by any means so my description is lacking detail, but I know this is one of the key differences.
